Standards-Based Learning in the Arts

OVERVIEW OF STANDARDS-BASED LEARNING

Standards-based learning is the expectation across the district. Teachers will use students' proficiency to determine their grade in each subject area. Work habits, participation, behavior, and attendance will be part of the citizenship grade and will not impact the academic grade. For more information about standards-based learning, visit the district's SBL site at https://sites.google.com/sandi.net/sbl/home

CRITICAL CONCEPTS AND PROFICIENCY SCALES

The arts have critical concepts and proficiency scales, too! Critical concepts are summarized and clarified versions of the California Arts Standards, while proficiency scales define how students show progress towards the critical concepts on a scale of 1 (below standards), 2 (approaching standards), 3 (meeting standards), and 4 (exceeding standards). Proficiency scales identify vocabulary and skills students must have to meet the critical concept. They help teachers determine where students are and what they need to teach, and can be used to have students self-assess themselves.

Use the links below to view each discipline's critical concepts. Proficiency scales are still in development, so where they are available, the scales are linked in in the critical concepts spreadsheets.
