How to Obtain A Substitute Assignment

Currently, we are not accepting Substitute Teacher ApplicationsPlease continue to check this website for updates on when we will begin accepting applications.


If you are a Visiting Teacher, substitute paraprofessional or clerical employee, you may obtain your assignment using the Substitute Assignment Management System ("SAMS") through the SmartFind Express online system. This system uses both an interactive voice response and internet-based system.

San Diego Unified is upgrading SmartFind Express, its Substitute Assignment Management System (SAMS), to offer a better user experience.  The SAMS system has been redesigned with a streamlined, user-friendly new substitute homepage.  As a part of this upgrade, we will be enabling Single Sign On functionality, which requires staff to log-in to the application using their employee ID and district password, rather than using a separate PIN.

You may also obtain work by waiting for the interactive voice response system to call and offer you an assignment. The system call out times are as follows:

  • Weekdays
    • 5:00 a.m.-11:55 a.m.
    • 5:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m
  • Weekends / Holidays
    • 5:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Sick Leave for Substitute Employees

The Healthy Workplaces Healthy Families Act of 2014 provides paid sick leave to substitute employees, who on or after July 1, 2015 works for 30 days or more in a year (July 1-June 30). Eligible employees will accrue 1 hour of sick leave for every thirty hours worked through the course of the fiscal year.
