Generally, a grievance exists when an employee, a group of employees, or the bargaining unit believes a violation of the collective bargaining agreement has occurred. Both the district and the bargaining unit encourage open discussion of grievances and the use of a variety of non-adversarial problem-solving techniques. Employees are encouraged to discuss work-related concerns with their immediate supervisor on an informal basis, and most issues can be resolved in this manner. However, if an employee desires remedial action, he or she may file a formal grievance with the district's Labor Relations Division. Individual employee bargaining units may have slightly different procedures for filing a formal grievance. This information can be found under the Grievance Article of each bargaining unit's contract. Employees are protected from discrimination, coercion, restraint, or reprisal in initiating either an informal or formal action.
